    Hotchkiss gun shell? -pic

picked this up, along with a SA drum hanger for $75.

what exactly is this shell, and whats it worth?

the guy seemed to think it was a WWI Hotchkiss shell. It has a navy anchor on it, and on the back a 5 point star. Its also 1901 dated from the looks of it. There is other markings on the back of the shell (as seen in photo).

    thanks guys!

    no one?

from what ive found, it appears to be a Spanish American war, US Navy , 37mm shell from a Hotchkiss gun.

anyone have a value estimate on this? id really like to know what its worth.

I think you are correct: it is the HE projectile from a Spanish-American War era 37mm Hotchkiss cannon (as used by the U.S. Navy on warships).

I've seen complete rounds (projectile + brass case) go for anywhere from $35 to $75; it all just depends on where/when/how you stumble upon the item.
