    220 mm shell casing

    I went to an auction this week end and picked up the 220 mm shell casing. It is dated Nov 1917 Dusseldorf RBM and a couple of other small marks. Can anyone help me with what type of artillery this was used in? I have looked in some of my books and on the web but can not really find anything.
    There was also a gigantic 440 mm casing dated 1915 which I assume would be a Big Bertha casing, they said it weighted 87 lbs. It sold for 650.00 and the bidding started so fast and went up where I did not even bid on it, I did not anticipate that it would bring that much. How much would those sell for?

      Dan,

      Do you have any photos of the larger shell casing (i.e. the one you did not buy)? A really large WWII German brass case such as you describe is not at all common here in the U.S. and I am not surprised that it brought $650.

        No I do not have a photo of the whole casing, just the stamp on the bottom, I actually thought I had a chance to get it at the auction and did not take a photo of the whole thing.

            Kurze Marine 14, M type or Gamma type was in 420mm, not 440mm.

              Interesting info on the skoda 220. From what I read about it talked about the howitzers made after ww1. This casing is dated 1917, so is there an earlier Skoda piece or is the photos of the post war models? Were there 220 Skoda artillery at Verdun?

                I think it is for 21cm Mörser http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/21_cm_M%C3%B6rser_10

                I have one similar brass case myself, unfortunately it hidden under a pile of stuff, and I cant confirm measurements.

                  Huuummm...
                  First Skoda: 1928
                  First Mörser 18: 1939

                  Mörser 10 was in 210mm

                    21cm means diameter of the shell only. For example 10,5cm howitzer case is 11,5cm wide. So 22cm wide case is in my opinion possible for 21cm mörser.

                      Hi,

                      I think too,like Ville, it is for german 21cm Mörser. Dimesions for 21cm mörser shell are width 219mm (top), total height 232mm, total width at the bottom of shell is 236mm. Hope this helps.

                        measured my my shell again.

                        The shell is 220mm od, 230mm high, base of shell 230mm.
                        Interior is a little harder, 217mm?
