    Large German Box/Crate

I picked this up today-I wish I had what was probably mailed home in it!. Does anyone know what the stenciled markings are or what this box was typically used for. It is about 2 feet wide and 1.5 feet tall.

        Very nice box.

SD1(Sprengbombe Dickwandig 1) was one of the german airdropped Cluster Bombs.
You can see this bombtype on sale at Estand/Ordance section.

175 means how many specific items it included.

This bombtype used AZ73 type fuze,so this box is propably for them.

Does the box have metallic layer inside?

        Here is my own examples:

          Hello,
For me the partially preserved label is same like these here:

          http://wehrmachts.kisten.free.fr/sd1_2.htm
But I think the crate was initially used to carry TNT-charges or something related. Because the cental stenciling "Fp. 02" looks older than the upper one ("Fp. 02" = Füllpulver 02 = German abbreviation for TNT).
Later its purpose was switched to SD-1 fuzes.

Yes,we can see that Fp marking is earlier made than SD1 markings.Box usage has changed. So paper label remains say 50 SD1 bombs,it could hold that many bomblets(weight 50kg).

But what about 175->it cannot hold that many bombs,so it gotta mean fuzes.

This box have had atleast 3 different usages on its history(german usage).

Thanks for the additional info. The man that mailed it was assigned to HQ Co. 26th IR, 1st Infantry Division. I would guess it was mailed shortly after the War ended. The box does not have a metal lining.
