Hey everyone
I was out detecting today and found a 50 cal. shell marked DM 43.
I know its american des moines made, so to the question-
an english lancaster was shot down by german fighters in 1944
could the shell be from the lancasters gunners ?

I see that's a "clear view" turret as mentioned in Len Deighton's excellent novel "Bomber" - it must have been freezing in there!

Hi

I doubt your .50 cal shell is from the lancaster. All the air battles that US aircraft fought over Europe disiminated large numbers of spent .50 cal shells all over the place.

Your lanc that crashed probably had .303 machine guns, and shells from crash sites are often in a dmaaged condition making them easily recognisable.
