    Paris Gun Shell Fragment

    Hi Folks -

Well, it's not too large now, but it was pretty spectacular at the time. Here is a small shell fragment from the German WW1 Paris Gun. I'D'd to the date and location it fell and to the gentleman, who went on to be US Ambassador to the Netherlands in 1923, who gathered it up.

Thought it might be of interest. Note the rifling that has been milled into the 'steel !' On the one closeup you can see part of the groove behind the rifling where the copper driving band went.

    Best regards!
    - Mike

            Thanks Guys -

Yes, I was pretty thrilled to find out it was a part of the Paris Gun projectile. You never know what might pop up. Course the 'hunt' is at least 80% of the fun!

I'm reading Miller's book on the Paris Gun now and the rifled steel was one of the features that helped decipher what was landing on them. Neat descriptions of how the loaded it and 'gently' aligned that rifling in the barrel.

            Best regards! Mike

Neat ww1 momento! Thanks for sharing!

Here's an EARLIER souvenir of a similar event!!!

This shell fragment with period label (from my brother's collection) dates from the first German-French conflict
                "Franco-Prussian War" (19 July 1870 – 10 May 1871)

History from Wikpedia: 1871 Siege of Paris
The Siege of Paris, lasting from September 19, 1870 – January 28, 1871, and the consequent capture of the city
by Prussian forces led to French defeat in the Franco-Prussian war and the establishment of the German empire.
In January, on Bismarck's advice, the Germans fired some 12,000 shells into the city over twenty three nights
in an attempt to break Parisian morale through terror bombing. About 400 perished or were wounded by the bombardment,
which "had little effect on the spirit of resistance in Paris.

                Label info (translation) :
                Siege of Paris
                fragment of shell
                fell on Rue Le Marois,
                January 10, 1871

(street name on label misspelled with 2 R's...)
The first German shell landed in that very same street 3 days earlier (January 7, 1871), this according to some research
found on the web! Rue Le Marois Événements : Premier obus Prussien tombé sur Paris pendant le siège - Dates : 7 janvier 1871

                    Wow!

What a Great memento. The documentation certainly brings these 'bits and pieces' to life and gives them a context.

I wonder, perhaps they thought if it worked once..., maybe it will work again.

                    Thanks very much Nick!

A very nice piece, I have read Millers book many times and have visited (where I think) the Paris gun or guns were sited.
                        Well done.
