    Disarming a Russian box mine

    Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post my question, but I'll give it a go.

Can anyone tell me what these pioneers are doing in this photo? It's from a photographic sequence where a mine is detected, dug up, examined and then gently cracked open with a pick-axe!

This photo shows the examination stage. The officer on the left is holding a small box and what looks like a fuse in his teeth. What are they? Also, what is the clock-like device being help atop the wooden mine? Perhaps something to determine if the mine is active?

    Thanks for any help!
    Jason

Thanks Don. I don't know much about mines but surely that cap didn't come from the Russian mine.

      Any other thoughts?

Maybe they are going to use it as a demo charge. Perhaps to destroy a pile of them.

Maybe not related to this topic but nevertheless an interesting photo.

I believe the guy on the right is holding a Russian clockwork timing device. I'll have to check my refs when I get home to be sure.

I'd be very interested to hear more.

Looks like a "Hey y'all, watch this!" moment.

                Very unsafe and unprofessional.
That cap will take his face off.
They are sensitive to static electricity and fiddling about with that apperatus looks like a real bad idea.

There are good reasons for established procedure.
