I have an original German "Bouncing Betty" anti-personnel mine that I recovered in Norway in 2005. It consists of the top, including the stem which held the prongs, a rubber seal around the stem, a downtube, and the inner cylindrical sleeve. Presumably, the bottom and outer sleeve were cut away at the time the mines were pulled from the ground and deactivated. I took one of the few mostly intact examples from what was a fairly large pile of mostly heavily rusted metal fragments.
A retired friend, who has spent his entire life in this coastal town of Norway, led us through the extensive, nearly unmolested and remarkably preserved bunker fortifications on the beach near his home. He then showed us the 'pile' of mines that he remembered being dumped at the site as a child.
Obviously, the mine is very heavily rusted. I keep it in a very dry location but it continues to shed fairly alarming amounts of metal.
Can anyone suggest a paint or some kind of compound I can use to seal the metal before it disappears completely?
