    mortar tail fin?

Hello. The images that I have attempted to attach, are of a metal fragment recently purchased as a souvenir in Volgagrad.

The brass base has "dnf 41" stamped on it.

Some one has wedged a bullet between the fins.

I thought it might be the tail section of a mortar round or small bomb.

Can anyone help in the identification of this fragment?

    Thanks, Brett

    Hi Brett,

    welcome to the forum,

it is the tail section of a German 5cm Mortar round IMO.

The maker of the propulsion round is "dnf" made in 1941

    dnf = Rheinische-Westfälische Sprengstoff-Aktion-Gesellschaft, Werk Nürnberg-Stadeln

    Cheers

    François

        Hi all:
Has too many fins for be a 5 cm mortar, François, I think that it is the tail section of an 8 cm mortar. The 5 cm mortar only has 4 pair of fins.

Also, a very nice relic from the begining of the end of the German army. Nice addition to any collection, Brett. Congrats.

Thank you for your comments Miguel.

I have measured the diameter of the fins, and it is 8cm.

            Does that confirm your identification?

            Regards, Brett

                    Cm not Mm

                    Hi:
Germans never used the mm for their rounds. They always used cm. Mm were used by the USA and British used inchs. Yes, you have a 8CM Wurfgranate 34 tail, Brett. Check here, it is a French site, it is excellent and all the other nice words you can think. A real Bible. http://wehrmachts.kisten.free.fr/80m...w34_bois_2.htm
