    German Shell Mystery

Greetings, I recently purchased a WW1 German shell casing and was wondering if anyone can figure out which gun it came from. It is 51cm in circumference (20 inches), and has the following markings:

    802
    Aug 1918
    KARLSRUHE
    PATRONENFABRIK
    Sp255

I was told by the grandson that Patronenfabrik was the company name, Karlsruhe the place of manufacture. He said Sp255 is an inspection mark meaning "spandau", and 802 refers to the quality of the metal of the shell.

Can anyone shed light on how much of this information is correct, or from which type of gun this came from?

    All the best,

    Bruce

p.s. If Karlsruhe was the place of manufacture why is Spandau on the inspection mark?

I am trying to decipher the inscription which reads:

    4th Nov 1918
    Mormal forest
    oderint dum metuat

If I knew what kind of gun it was, I would be able to find out more about the inscription. The "grandson" had no information on the inscription, which threw the rest of the information into doubt.

In Spandau (at those days a small garrison town west of Berlin) was the Artillerie-Prüfungskommission (artillery construction and inspection commission) located.

Patronenfabrik Karlsruhe = Cartridge Factory Karlsruhe (but they had maybe more than one factory, not only the first one in Karlsruhe).

I don't know what Sp255 means, but the same question as You had Miss U. Näther, curator from the Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe - Referat Volkskunde, info(at)landesmuseum.de
They had a shell like yours and whant to know more, so she asked last year there: http://sammler.com/militaria/

Maybe she had the answer now and is able to tell You more about the cartridge factory.

Maybe the shell is from a gun like in the link below:

      15cm Turmhaubitze

        Many Thanks Gunter!

This looks exactly like the inside of the shell. The only question now is, did they have these fortifications in the Mormal forest? If not, I would suspect that the inscription is a recent addition.

        Many thanks,

        Bruce

These markings, and the shell seem identical, can you translate the German for me? It would be great to see if this lady had an answer to her question.
          Cheers and beers, Bruce.

            Hello

You have to give the right dimensions of the shell if you want to know to which gun it belongs. Calibre? Length? (50cm)

            802= Lot number
            Sp255= unidentified inspection stamp

              ...

Bruce, the German text what follows was her question. Not worth to translate it. It's a board where other can see the questions and answer via email.

If You don't want to ask her in English and via email, I will call her, but next week as we have a holyday tomorow.

Alas, the trail has gone cold. The lady in question does not reply to emails.

As for the shell dimensions, it looks like the shell was cut to a shorter length, so the only thing I have to go on is the shell circumference as noted above.
