1st War Shell Case,ID needed please!

Hello,

Here is a pic of the base of a shell case I picked up yesterday.

It's dated 1917,and marked SCHNEIDER,it sounds German,but is it?

The case measures 3 inches across the mouth.

After doing a search it appears that this could be French as they had a field gun of the same name.

Still not 100% sure though,does anyone have a positive ID on this please?

I measured the length which is 15 inches.
