Yes, the zip fastener are watertight, because there are two zip fasteners:
one outside and one inside with rubber strips in between.

Hello glaser,
special iron sandals were used with the diving suit.

These iron sandals were also used on board without the diving suit only with the Kleintauchgerät.
These photos were taken on U-178 on march 19th, 1945.
Maschinenmaat Ohlheiser goes into the water to seal up the "Steuerbord Regelzelle".
He wears a Kleintauchgerät, weight chains and iron sandals.
