U-141 foul weather southwester hat. Thoughts?

Thoughts on this piece? It's stamped U-141.

Just seems odd to me that, with over 1100 U-boats in the war, they'd feel the need and take the time to stamp basic head gear with specific boat numbers. Any thoughts?
