the copper coating is a base coat so the silver/gold plating sticks better

        Yes indeed it is !
You see it like a sandwich from the side ! It’s unseen when the gold wash is covering it!
I wonder if the gold finish was removed from my example ,
Any I gave it a wipe over
        Kind regards Chay

          Hi Steve,

Nice gold plated cupal bird of unusual colour (for cupal) as it is usually of a brownish gold colour similar to the one posted by Chay while yours looks bright gold & silver on the back judging from your pictures which would be a first for me. This maker did produce a less common bright gold specimen like yours but it is made of gilded tombac/brass so it doesnt have the oval plates under the hinge & catch like cupal birds have. Based on mine I would also say that the lower clasp may have been replaced on yours.

Attached are front & back picts of the same bird by this maker in cupal including the rarer fire gilded brass specimen at top. There is also a cloth mounted aluminum version of the same eagle that I dont have.

          Hope this helps

No problem Chay. You see lighter colour (more goldish) cupal ones here & there but the "brown" ones we have are probably the most common colour/finish you see for this variant. For some reason, the silver ones seem to have a more consistent metallic silver finish than the "gold" ones.

              Best
