    Quite possible. Especially since it's the eagle shield with more chance that it would have been removed at one time due to the offending swastika and then restored later. (But this is all speculation based upon limited observational data.)

      The GI signed tropenhelm was found in a Montana antique store in 1985. Was thinking that the swap may have taken place during the war at the time it was taken. Maybe this eagle had a nicer look at the time. But your idea makes even more sense, thanks for your thoughts Norm
