    Hi

Im afraid IMO it is a US NAVY sailor hat without the cap tally, probaby would be the generic one:US NAVY,on the other hand this type of hat was used until 1963 when changed for the white cotton hat for sailors in US NAVY
    Regards from Spain

It was not so much exchanged as eliminated from the seabag. It was a nice hat but not popular with most US sailors. I wish they had kept it longer but today, a mute point with the drastic changes to the US naval uniform, at least in practice. Meaning, the use of camo utilities instead of working dungarees aboard ship and the permission to wear such utilities off base. Until fairly recently (the 1990's) you had to wear the uniform of the day off ship which would have been the traditional sailor uniform and white hat.

So it is more and more relegated to ceremonial events instead of a uniform for everyday wear.

Female uniform changes are even more drastic going from the "traditional" female uniform (skirt, blouse and jacket with distinctive hat) to testing, for now, a "unisex" one style for all look.
