It certainly was worn and the insignia looks set in. It's floppy and smelled like it should, also had nice oil/sweat marks on the lining.

I would say in today's environment of the collecting world .....YES...now if you find someone who likes field made that's another story but most collectors are book learned of forum learned and strive for STANDARD TEXTBOOK...JMHO

I totally agree with you. I have seen WWII pictures from battlefields where soldiers use field made items that are far from textbook. If any of those items would be accepted on a forum (without refeering to a picture from WWII), I don't know. IMO, In most cases they don't.

Why collectors strive for textbook ? Because this is sometimes the only way to be sure it is a period item as too many fake "deviations" were and are explained by fieldmade, field-upgraded, field-tailored, field-repaired, foreign-made, and so on.

The best one I recently had is that a General !! had bought a second -hand uniform of an colonel because he was short on money and got it re-tailored...for this reason the name in the tailor tag was striked out and replaced....

Unfortunately many period items have to suffer from this...but personally I do also feel more comforatbel with textbook items as well as I convinced that re-sale is much easier with those.

But I certainly think this cap is good...
a shame we as collectors have to pigeonhole every item we see.

You have a good point and I do agree with you as well. The problem is that if something that is original field made and you post it on a forum, the chances that it get's the "thumbs down" is really high and then the item is doomed. I have even seenstack of items (same item) that was found in a german depot here in Norway has been given "thumbs down" because it was not listed in any books and therefor had to be fake. Reference books are really good to have, but not everything is listed in those books so when people can't fint it in their books, they automatically assume that it is a fantasy item. That is IMO the scary part because your perfectly original item will be doomed untill you can find a picture of it in use. has happened to me a lot of times in here, but after several years I have been able to find documenation on most of the items and that turned the table around. For others, they might just throw the items away since the person already has been told by "experts" that it is a fake or a fantasy piece.

Regarding the cap. It looks good to me as well, but can this be a SS m43? They used this style of M43 with one button. I have no knowledge when it comes to SS, but I would have posted the cap in the SS section just to hear what they have to say there.

Don't think this is factory nor SS ...although as you noticed..SS single button style..I actually did some years back own a CA M43 that was vet sourced and was true ly at 1 point a W SS single button cap....
