Yes, it's a marine ammo case! For 700 stk 9 mm

It is an ammo box from the Kaiserliche Marine. These boxes were used on U-boats, torpedoboats and other smaller vessels that had a wet or damp environment.

Does it have a label inside the lid? The early labels were for 600 rounds of the original truncated P.04 rounds. Later labels show 700 rounds of P.08 ammo.

In my little group of P.04 collectors there are four of these, and we know of five or six others.

I would very much like to buy this one, if you are considering selling it.
