Request for Information, Ship's Anchor Box

    Gentlemen;

We have a ship's metal anchor box with the following inscription:

    " Ersatzanker "

    and

    " Gleichstr. Kdo Umf "

We are wondering what the "Gleichstr...." line means. Could any Kriegsmarine advanced collectors here on the WAF decipher this line?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Best regards to all,

    Clay

It means "Gleichstrom Kommando Umformer" (electrical converter)

      Hello Christian;

Thank you very much for the information. We really appreciate your help.

We have now been able to take photographs of the metal box and we have attached those photographs to this thread.

This box came from a collector who gathered up very interesting Third Reich objects (A.H. silver, autographs, etc.) during the 1990's, if our memory serves us correctly.

This box measures 31 inches in length.

      Best regards to all,

      Clay

            No,

            It's a misunderstanding.
This box is is for an electrical spare part called "Anker" in German. Ersatz means "spare".
It is NOT an anchor for setting the ship on ground!!
Grille is the name of a German Funkmessanlage (radar).
So no relation to Hitler's yacht and no relation to a ships anchor.
            Regards
            Christian

              Hello Christian:

Would this be a military equipment related box? If so what branch of service? Luftwaffe, Navy, Army?

Your good help is very much appreciated.

                Hi,
Yes, military equipment and most probably Kriegsmarine.
I am away from home and do have no m$eans to look in my files. I can do this in two weeks.
                Regards
                Christian

                    Grille

The Grille is a part of the Wuerzburg "radar" (the dipol in the center of the dish)
An "Anker" is translated as "Armarture" in English.

Attached a photo of the WB and the "Grille"

                        Hello Christian:

Thank you very much for this fine explanation.

Upon reflection, would you still think this metal chest is for Kriegsmarine use or more for Luftwaffe?

We are very interested in your valued opinion.

The Wuerzburg was used by all three branches of the Wehrmacht.
Based on the color of the box I would say Kriegsmarine...but this is my opinion.
