I assume the officers purchased their own shoes, but for the formal uniform, was there a particular pattern or style of shoe used for these?

sorry for late reply, missed your question.
I would use for a formal uniform (like Rogge's frock coat) the high ankle boots used generally by Wehrmacht-Officers. In Angolia is a pic of an officer in frock-coat wearing those.
The picture I posted is a pair from last Hermann Historica auction.
