It's called "Affenjacke" because the sleeves are longer then the bottom of the jacket body.

            It's dress jacket.

A nice piece. I love these items that have the red laundry mark inside. Quite nice.

                    Hi ww2.collector,

This type of tunic is also called the parade jacket (Paradejacke).

                    Best regards,
                    ---Norm

In the US Army, it is known as a Mess Jacket as is normally worn at Dinning In's. Civil War times: a Shell Jacket. Army has them in Blue and for the well dressed, White
                      A nice pre-war affenjacke!

But the jacket shown by ww2.collector at the start of the thread is not the officer's mess jacket, but rather the Dienstjacke, the regular service dress for sailors and Petty Officers, worn when "walking out". The officer's mess jacket (Messejacke) has longer lapels, only 4 buttons instead of 9 and no sleeve buttons. They look quite similar in style, hence the confusion. The Messejacke comes in both blue and white versions but the common Dienstjacke/Paradejacke is only part of the blue uniform.

                        Best regards,
                        ---Norm

Another officer's mess jacket, previously posted by Andjelo:
                          http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=630021

Not to be confused with the Paradejacke.

                          Best regards,
                          ---Norm
