                These hats are notoriously difficult to assess, but it looks like all the parts are good to me.

                  John has way more experience with these caps then I do, but based on forum observations alone I agree that the parts look like good unworn components. The only comments I would add are:

                  1) It's missing the celluloid band stiffener I like to see and that can be seen on this one:

                  2) Unworn caps like this are sort of like KM daggers -- without provenance it's impossible to know if it's an intact wartime product or put together post-war from individual components.

                  I'd like to know if non-private purchase caps (i.e. standard Navy issue) were issued in wartime without the celluloid stiffeners, because if not then I don't see why it would be absent from an unworn example?

                    I do not know if the stiffeners mean anything or not. Maybe they were removed sometimes by the sailor. Or fell out later.

                    I do like the white name tag sewn into the cap.

                    However, I have one or two without the name tag.
