Hydrophone Badge Help

Hi All,

Does anyone have any ideas why this version of hydrophone badge would have 'waves' or 'sea' surrounding the arrow.

(So far I can't find images of another example for comparison).

Could it mean the difference between operators on u boats versus surface vessels?

No, that insignia shows a symbol of sending the waves through the water, which is the way the hydrophone works.

It sends the wave and picks up it's reflection from an object.

There is no other hydrophone insignia as far as I know.
