    Buchheim books

Wow, just saw Das Boot (again)
and after that was browsing in Lothar-Günther Buchheim's three books I bought last week.
Many very interesting photo's that show live on board an U-boot!
and written/compiled by a man that went on three tours himself as a "Kriegsberichter", so knows what he talks about.
The trilogy includes over 5,000 photographs taken!
Must haves for anyone interested in the KM
Go get them! Won't get better.

While I'm sure that his pictures are ok, you should also know that he was not allowed at any U-Boat crew reunions as they did not respect him and after his book "Das Boot" came out, his book signings were regularly picketed by real U-Boat crewmen . They just didn't like what he wrote about them Two U-Boat Commanders got together and wrote a book entitled "So war das nicht!" It took apart the book "Das Boot" and countered Buchheim's descriptions as fabrications, with the way it really was on a U-Boat

          Thanks for the additional info!

It indeed has to be said that Das Boot is a novel.
The other three books above are non-fiction. Can't judge how accurate they are though.

Is there a version in English?

Sorry no English version available, it did not take off like Buchheim's book. No pictures, "just the facts mam". They also railed against the movie, not all of it, but the Officer's club scene's and of course, the "baptism" by the crew pissing on the car as it went by

Being in the army for 14 years and being there during the war in Croatia, I tend to believe the scenes from the club.

Now I'm smiling when those pictures come to my face. Ridiculous.

I'm not saying it's been like that with Uboot crews, but I really believe it is possible.

What's the most funny thing, I don't take it for bad. It's part of soldier's life, isn't it? After or before so much complications, fear and danger, one must untie the mind and let go...

Somehow I doubt that pissing scene is real. Too much for me, honestly.
