    KM Tellermütze

    Hi ffriends,

wanted to share my new KM cap with you. Maker is Franz Ritter, Dettingen and it´s marked 1941 on the sweatband.

The plastic, or what it is, is broken and ver hard and out of form. Any chance to bring this back in form?

The white cover is from a very thin cotton.

    All opinions are aprreciated

        Hi Rüdiger,

Looks very nice! Is it one piece or does the top detach?

That "plastic" is, I believe, celluloid and is a good sign for originality I think.

        Best regards,
        ---Norm

Nice Teller, no problems with its originality IMO , as Norm said the hard celluloid is a good sign.

            Thanks friends

It´s not a one piece version, white top can be removed. Size is 56, fits perfect to my parade jacket.

Maybe i can get lucky to find a blue top that fits in size ......

Want to present that cap together with the jacket on a small mannequin in the future

Here´s my parade jacket with the rest of the underwear
Can´t wait till everything is finished but still need a little bit time

              Hi Rüdiger,

Great Obermaschinenmaat Paradejacke, etc.!! You're really branching out with your collecting in a big way.

              Best regards,

                  Once more thanks

Is there any chance to bring that broken and very hard celloloid back in form?

On the 2nd pic you can see that the cap is not round. Normally no problem as it´s without a problem possible to put it on a glas head but i would love to have it nearly in his correct form.

Or does it turn back round while sitting for a long time on a glas head??

I have had the out of round problem with many, if not all, of my caps. I use fellow forum member Skipper Greenwade's hat forms to keep them in shape.

Putting them on a mannequin head will not work IMO so I use the adjustable wooden forms that Skipper custom makes for you. I have quite a few of his forms. They come in two sizes, both adjustable, you would need the regular size, not the small size..

                    His website:

This is what it would look like:

Nearly all of my caps are like yours, naval caps. I see you are in Germany and from my experience on ebay.de the wooden forms sold in Germany are very expensive compared to Skipper's prices.

                        Many thanks, John

That is a very interesting site and in my brain it´s just working how i could do that for myself in combination with a mannequin

My skills in working with wood are not the worst and so i maybe could build my own one

Good to hear that almost all naval caps have this problem as they were mostly bad stored under towels etc. through the years

You will see the problem when you check out the head shapes on mannequins these days. Not only the shape of the head, but the face on the mannequins leave a lot to be desired for a KM sailor display.

Or, you could just use a torso mannequin for the nice jacket and uniform and have the cap displayed next to it on a wooden frame and stand.

If you are able to make the form yourself, make sure to have the adjustable expander inside.

                          John

                            Hi Guys,

Here is my Maschinenmaat parade uniform display for reference.

While I do think Justin's display is fabulous, I have to agree with John's point about the face of a mannequin not being right for a KM sailor. These mannequins are just too "pretty" and don't capture the right mood -- better for modeling underwear...

                              Best regards,
