    German Sea Mine Horn

I've had this in my collection for a while, the description when I bought it was German WWII Sea Mine horn, but there are no markings. Can anyone confirm if indeed this is from a German Sea Mine from WWII?

Hi, Without markings its difficult to tell where its from? I suppose it could be worked out by the pitch of the thread to see what type it is UNF, A/F, Metric ? (German = Metric ? ) Regards Toby.

Hello It looks like a fine original german horn to me, these are sometimes stamped with markings on the nut where you put the wrench around to fasten it to the mine, do you see any markings there?
Originals horns are made of lead, with an acid ampoule in it, when a ship brushed up against one of these it would deform the lead, crush the ampoule, and initiate the fuze.

        Best Regards Thorsteinn.

          Thanks guys.

Toby, how would I determine the pitch of the thread? Take it to a hardware store and try different nuts on it?

Thorsteinn I just took another look at the nut portion under bright light with a magnifying glass, and guess what, I found a marking after all. Unfortunately it is hard to read, but it appears to be "gv" in a circle.

Hi, Sorry no, You need a pitch/thread gauge to determine the type of thread (any good engineering/metalwork shop will have one and will be able to tell you what you have.)
            Regards Toby.

                        red band kriegsmarine mine horn

Found in Deutsche Minenräundienstvorschrift Nr13 (1946), page 29: : some mines had a less lower charge of 250 kg and were indicated by red color on the mine horns
