You thought it was a toned Heer to start with, so I am not sure what your point was, really. I agree some Heers are strongly toned and can resemble KMs. There are other differences, however, that can help distinguish them from Heers, including the prominent ridge of these layered decals. As 808 points out, the prominent ridge on this decal identifies it as a KM regardless of color. Toned KMs are usually very dark, often due to discolor in lacquer used on these to prevent flaking. Also note that the white part of the tricolor is a very different hue compared to the eagle decal on this particular helmet. Thus, if it was a very toned Heer, you would expect a similar yellowing of the tricolor.
I am only sharing and not looking for expert opinions here. I seek those among the helmet specialists on other fora, including the Burnett forum here on WAF. There does not seem to be much interest in helmets on this forum, which is understandable. I just thought I would share some of my KM helmets, since these are actually rarer than SS helmets, and perhaps of interest to some members on this forum.
This is a great forum, by the way, and I am really glad to see one dedicated to Kriegsmarine field equipment!Last edited by NARVIK1940; 12-25-2011, 05:14 PM.
