    Sawfish cap badge

    Hello,
this is not my field so I ask your help about this sawfish cap badge, usually associated to U96 or 9th flotille.
I bought it some days ago. Doing a research I find a thread that show a badge almost identical to mine:
    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=332277

What do you think about my sawfish badge? Good or fake?

PS. many thanks to Mr. Ludwig and Mr. Kirk who kindly replied to my PM before badge acquisition.

    Greetings
    brus

Just to reference, these are the most common fakes/repros I found on web, sold as copies.

Struggling to understand why 2 hand made u-boat badges would have the same imperfections!?

If they were hand made they would not have them, so they must be machine made or stamped.

Not 100% sure what this means, but if they were machine made wouldn't the mould be better finished as the final result appears to be made by hand?

Confused a little - verging on the 'fake' but only because there are 2 of them!

        Cheers Mike

          Hello Mike,
          thanks for your reply!
Yes of course these two badges were machine made in a raw way, not by hand. I have mark the same details to show they came from the same source.
My question is: is sure that all these cap badges were made only by hand? Or there is the possibility that some were made by a rough stamp/machine?

          Greetings

IMO fake unless with undisputed provenance.

Ones I have see have all been hand made and are obviously all slightly different

Yes i see what you are saying and this is what I thought, but if there was a small stamping machine I think they would have made the mould a lot better as the finished article looks very rough. So therefore its been made to look hand made but then you can't have to hand mades with the same markings, so its alarms bells are ringing a bit!

I do not know if there was ever a machine - I very much doubt it and have never read about a machine existing!

Agreed, everybody can create such a thing with only minor talent...

I bought two of these badges at the Trier flea market 25 years ago. One was smaller than the other, for wear on the Schiffchen. They both had four prongs soldered on the reverse and sadly I never took pics of them. I sold them to my late friend Don Frailey about 10 years ago.

Thank you for doing the comparison, although many people like to jump on the 'fake' bandwagon I appreciate the effort you have gone to in order to try and show the badge openly and in comparison even though it goes against what you desire. It helps others so well done!

Yes, I hope this thread can help other collectors.
I understood that these badges are plain so they are very easy to reproduce... this leads us to classify them as fakes at first sight.

Hard to say, but IMO nothing speaks against it.
