Well, I'd actually translate Matrosengefreiter as "Able Seaman" - at least in Britain or Canada. I think in the U.S. it's just called "Seaman" (the 3rd pay level above Seaman Recruit and Seaman Apprentice). Matrosengefreiter is just the same as Gefreiter - one chevron on the sleeve - really just a trained private. It's the second lowest rating in the Kriegsmarine, just above Matrose. Leading Seaman and Lance Corporal are terms associated with the most junior non-commissioned officers.
