    Scharnhorst cap tally original ?

    Hi,

Here is a cap tally that I bought many years ago (in the 1980's), can anybody tell me if this is original and if so what is the current value.

    Many Thanks
    Chris

Cris, could you post an image of the entire tally and the overall length in cms?

This is not a good one IMO due to the shiny thread on the reverse but lets look at the entire tally.

It most probably is an example of the tally sold in the gift store of HMS Belfast. The Scharnhorst fake is a tricky one unfortuately. A view of the entire tally will tell the story I think.

As John Robinson pointed out, the Scharnhorst is a tricky, especially with a cotton/cellon versions due to the HMS Belfast post war museum copy.
The Belfast will have been cut at one end shorter creating uneven length to it, a sure fire sign of being a post war copy. Looking forward to seeing the full size picture.

Cotton is not the problem. It is cellon. Cotton versions of this tally are easily identified if original and we have decent images of the reverse.

I avoid this tally unless full length (at least 110 cms) and equal on both sides.

Chris, the reverse of your tally is an exact match to the Belfast copy posted by Jody here:
                  http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...=161009&page=2
Also you're in England! Hm. Short end on your tally, n'est-ce pas?
                  Best regards,
                  ---Norm

P.S. Also I notice that your photo from the farther distance shows a feature that was evident from Jody's photographed at that distance - a moire pattern to the black ribbon that makes it look coarsely ribbed despite the fact that on the closer up view this disappears. This is a photo artifact that seems more pronounced on this type of tally due to the properties of the black ribbon -- again doesn't seem like an original.

                      Hi Guys,

Sorry about the delay in posting this full size image, but here it is.

The tally is about 97cm in length.

Thanks for all the help and advice so far.

Hi Chris and thanks for the image. That settles it though, it is the Belfast fake.

I suppose to be more charitable we should call it the HMS Belfast gift shop souvenir reproduction - "fake" sounds so devious!
                          Best regards,
