    Two new tallies

Well the latest tallies have arrived and I've tried to photo/scan a couple of them. Must admit I'm not sure what to make of these two.

The 2. Marine etc looks ok to me, material, lettering etc.

The Gneisenau however I have serious doubts about. The material have a rubber like feeling and it's very elastic. I'm able to strecth the band at least 1 cm(!) so any comments are very welcome.

First a cropped photo of the obverses.

            Hi Frank,
            Nice pictures!
First my disclaimer: I have never had any cotton/Baumwolle/Perlgarn/Kunstseide tallies in hand, having only Metallfaden tallies, and all my study to date has been based on studying photos and reading this forum, so I can hardly be called an expert!

That said, I like both these tallies from the pictures. Regarding the stretchability, see Markus' old post here:
            http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...&postcount=319
According to him, the pre-war tallies can stretch up to 2 cm. Pending the response from others more knowledgeable, I think that Gneisenau just may be an awesome score of a mint period official Navy issue Kunstseide named tally -- unless I'm out to lunch of course!

P.S. How long is it and are the ends cut at 45 degrees?
            Best regards,
            ---Norm

Thanks Norm and that makes two of us. I have also only handled gold wire tallies and although I've studied eg your latest posts, thanks again, it's not the same.

Anyway, the length is 90 cm and the ends are cut straight. It does look old with a couple of small holes here and there and the info from Markus about the stretching do help a lot. Maybe there's still hope

                Very interesting..

The Gneisenau looks to be a cotton version for sure BUT the marineunter is definitly causing me some concern.. I'll be interested to see what the opinions are on these babies!

At least if it isn't OK you have an original of the best of the 2!!

As discussed just recently with the 3 different types of thread used the Marineunter has the freyed style thread.. This is usually a sign of a repro or am I wrong???
I have seen this thread in the more fancier up market Tallies with the Flags on them but for just standard KM tallies did they make them with this style of thread?
One good thin is that it has the ghosting around the script but as with HMS Belfast Tally it was too showing this and it is a post war repro!

                Hmm....

Thanks Justin, I like your optimism

Have studied the old threads again but must admit I'm not a lot wiser. There are some pros and cons on both like the ghosting but like you mention, it was on Jody's Belfast tally as well
