    Wilhelm Gustloff Tally

Here is a cap tally from the Wilhelm Gustloff which was sunk by a Soviet torpedo in what is considered the worst single ship disaster in maritime history. Thanks for looking. Ron

100% original and very nice example. Ron, yours is the rarest of Gustloff series of tallies, the others having red and white stripes top and bottom. All are very rare though.

John, I believe you're referring to the same type as Jody's tally shown earlier on?

I've seen another one as well, white background, blue letters and two thin red and black stripes top and bottom. How about that one?

Thanks Ron for showing the Gustloff

Yes, the one posted above is the same as Jody's I think (my post 5). He will be posting his here shortly to make sure. There was also a white one as you indicated. As far as I know, 2 different white types and the two different black examples.

                      Hi Robin,

I thought the Goya lost around 6000, Gustloff 9000.

                        Hello John.

My understanding is that around 5,100 died on the Gustloff (the rest were rescued), while around 6,800 died on the Goya (very few were rescued from that one).

I think the exact figures are still in doubt, though.

In his book on Berlin, Antony Beevor certainly favours the Goya as being the ship that suffered the biggest loss of life.

Well, lots of controversy since the ship packed them on before she sailed. Current thought is over 10,000 were actually aboard of which 9000 died.

Bottom line, no real manifest was taken at the very end of boarding. The crew was just trying to get out as many as possible and if not sunk, it would have worked.

"Cap Arcona" comes in at 5000 dead.

I think this is a pretty balanced website and full of facts:
