Wwii German U-boot U-141 Member Cigarette Case Opinions Please

    HI

What do you think about it ? It is on sale on e-b.y

The ukrainian seller has also a other cigarette case to sell but for a other U-Boot...

If the insigna, the devil on a torpedo looks correct the inside endgraving is post war for me...

I think it is a fake, a good old cigarette case but a modern engraving

    Regards

    Philippe

    Hi Philippe,

The design of the cigarette case looks 1900 - 1920 period.

To me the emblem outside and the engraving inside looks postwar, and so to say very recent done.

There are loads of such items around on the market and most of them coming from eastern Europe.

Must say that the devil and the torpedo are nicely done.

    yours friendly

    Eric-Jan

    PS.

    U-141.
1.Oct.1941 became schoolboat of the 21.U.Flottille at Pillau.
1.March.1945 schoolboat of the 31.U.Flottille at Hamburg.
    5.May.1945 sunk in Wilhemshaven.

Maybe I am wrong but I have no idea what the engraving has to do with U-141 in combination with Wilhelmshaven 1944.

The lettering is poorly done. It doesn't look like the work of a professional engraver.

      For what it's worth.

        Thanks Eric-Jan

My Grand Father, who was german, born in RIESA-LICHTENSEE, near DRESDEN was mechanic on the U-141 all the war long. POW in England in 1945 and in a second time in France, he was naturalised french in 1950. So I am interessed by all the items and documents on the U-141

This dealer sell also a cigarette case of a sailor on the U-362. It is named WEIHN. The problem ? There is not WEIHN on the crew list of the U-362

So I think the engraving of these two nice cigarette case are fake !

        Regards

        Philippe

I also believe this is not a period U-boat case--these cases are frequent targets of the post war U-boat engraver.

I should caution you about one small detail. The crew lists for U-boats are rarely 100% complete. Many sailors are left out for one reason or another, so while this has little to do with fake cig. cases, you could find a badge lets say with a name that does not match internet data bases of crew lists.

In fact, those websites are continually looking for information to update those databases, so they are only guides that help, but are not the final say on who served on those vessels. To do that, you would need access to the German military archives and do the research yourself, not an easy task. John

In the past couple of years, there have been a flood of these cigarette and cigar cases, snuff boxes and compass cases coming out of Eastern Europe and being sold on e-bay. Just a tad suspicious.
