Restorating CH SS M42

Years ago I was one of the unfortunateones to get “burned” on an M42 helmet with the infamous “CH” SS “decal.”
I’d like to donate thishelmet to a local museum but not with the bogus decal.
What is the best way toremove this without damage to the original paint?
All help is appreciated.

It is not a decal but paint, I'd leave it alone as removing it might damage the helmets factory paint.
Someone will be along to explain how to go about this properly.
I'm sure it can be done with care.

Make sure it is paint, not a decal. There are at least 5 ch runic helmets that are in fact decals.

Most museums are full or repros and fakes anyway...

If it is realy a decal ( on painted ) than simply piece of cloth and hot water will be enought to remove the decal without harming the paint ( simply wet the cloth in hot water and rub the decal ).

Most of the period decals were applied like that ( with hot water and piece of cloth to remove excess of water ), so it wll probably work in other way.

First, I'd post it here to confirm that it is truly a champagne rune SS before you go and give it away or scrub the paint off. If it is, I think I would personally have the runes professionally removed. You might be surprised how nice it could come out, leaving you with a nice M42 ND to either add to your shelf, donate to the museum, or sell on the E-stand.

The museum will probably sell it anyway so they can buy something that the majority of people are interested in ( vintage shoes , vintage night dresses , old candy wrappers ) so I would personally stick it on the estand for $500 and keep the money for myself. Rob

Rumor has it two reside in The United States and three reside in Europe. The last CH runic helmet I saw was clearly paint.

Thank you all for the kind advice and for the offers to buy/trade for the helmet. This helmet appeared on this forum back in October of 2012. It was at that time that I learned the decal had been added post-war. Here is the link to that discussion with photos of said helmet.

Hi Michael, I don't belive that decal to be a painted 'champagne' rune but it is with 100% certainty a fake decal. Regards,

So a decal. Then an easy way to remove it as I have mentioned earlier ; piece of cloth and hot ( warm ) water and it will remove easily ( without harming the paint ).
