    German Helmet with Crazy Paint

    Hello

What are your thoughts on this helmet besides the crazy painted insignias?
It appears to have original decals under the painted ones?
The liner is nice and tight all the pins are flat and tight.
    Chinstrap dated 1939
The blue paint looks old but I do not see a luft decal.
    Thank you
    Tony

Apart from the horrible insignia, the blue/grey base colour is not original either, see how it has been painted over the liner rim. An original helmet ruined by bad overpaint.

Agreed. Fix it up as reenactor helmet and be done with it. Its not period.

              Possible "biker" helmet.

I think it's great looking. If it is a "Biker Helmet", I would leave it as is because that paint job and circumstances which led to it are now part of its history.

To the purist collector, the helmet may be ruined but to remove the paint won't make it pure again and there's no going back once this paint is removed.

If you don't like it, someone else does. Collecting so called biker helmets and jackets with original nazi insignia sewn on, has become a niche market and there is perceived value in these items.

Even fiberglas Ed Roth reproduction helmets are going for big prices now.

The bluegray is typical late war Luftwaffe overpaint.

I would love to get my hands on a big daddy Roth painted helmet
Give a man an opinion and you feed him for a day,
teach a man to use the "search" function on the WAF and you feed him for a lifetime.

From a restoration perspective thick paint like that might peel off easily using a credit card however it'll take hours upon hours and a sore neck to get it done. The result may be really, really good if the paint flakes off easily and preserved the helmet or it maybe be really bad and look like poo. There's not much in between in my opinion. Old paint may also stick to decals and pull off the top layer when removed.
