None of these pictures show a WWII German combat helmet (i.e., M35, M40 or M42 helmet). I am aware of this practice in the 1920's, but these were not official military units.

Correct...Sadly we will be waiting for a long time because it does not exist. This is crazy. No German soldier would paint a swaz on his helmet.

A helmet is worn for protection and survivability. Not to create a target for a sniper to pick you out of a group of soldiers.

In the 50's and 60's one could buy a helmet like this for $10. dollars or for that matter, lots of vets wives got tired of that German stuff laying around and just said get rid of it !! I know of a vet who brought back a beautiful (personalized) lugar and he gave it away...!!! In the 60's none of this had any value.

As I said, the vet got bored and painted the swaz cause he thought it was cool. This was done in the 50's or 60's cause he didn't even dig out the decal.

Lastly, IMO the texture, hue, application is not WW 2 applied. It's still a nice helmet without the vet art.

It's time to turn out the lights the party is over.

In the 60s you could buy an SS helmet for $20 too. Those days are long gone my friend. I know my helmet is most likely "vet art" but I still think there is a possibility, yes, just a possibility is was done by a German. It was done early on in the pre-war years as we see in the pics provided. I'm still waiting to see a war time pic too, lol. I know I saw one a couple of years ago when I was searching DAK threads. I had two good tropicals in the past few years. I know I saw a pic of two Austrailian soldiers outside a German tank wearing German helmets, one had a swatz on the front! Cant find it! I would never try to remove the swatz from my helmet to try to "improve" it because some think it lowers the value. I dont think it makes it better or worse. If I wanted to cover it up for display, I could just pop a big pair of goggels on it....

            Problem solved

In the last, desperate days of the war, the Germans recruited a group of American Harley-Davidson loving dispatch riders to join them in fighting Communists on the Eastern Front. They were called the "SS-Harley-Davidson Division" in honor of their favorite mode of transportation.
Here is a photo of one. I just happen to have one of the few surviving examples of their cuff title.

This is and should be the bottom line here.

Claiming this could have been done by a German soldier during the war is laughable and absurd.

I had a helmet with a big postwar added swastika like this once. I was able to very carefully remove it. I regarded it as a big improvement.

Maybe it was jazzed up by an American soldier before shipping it back home. Could be periode done even though it wasn't done by the German soldier it belonged to

Nice examples of German helmets with painted swastikas, I like them a lot, but..., none of the swastikas shown are geometrically correct [like my helmet] and done with the use of a stencil [like one done on a tank or piece of equipment]. I guess if you see the same "type" of thing over and over you can fail to see what is before your eyes. Show me a helmet with an old geometrically correct, stencil painted swastika. You guys do know what geometrically correct means, right?? You guys do know what a German swastika is supposed to look like, right?? I'm not so sure based on what I'm seeing.....The one on the biker helmet, really? The one on the helmet top, really? The one on the camo side, was the guy drunk?

And this one, in which the "dispatch rider" theory also made an appearance.

This is the reverse side of the helmet I found that is currently being offered for sale as an original cammo with GI art added. But looking at this eagle, I'm not so sure, it could be an obscure unit.

                              Rare

Looks like the seldom seen southern German "Foghorn Leghorn" division rare helmet...
