    new repro liners

    G'day to all of you

I just noticed an auction of a restored M40 on ebay (6517282770). The seller stated that he used a high-quality repro M31 liner. I know better pictures are needed, but from the ones provided so far it looks rather scary,no?

IMO no give-away by the pictures provided, maybe except for the lack of chipping on the rim of the leather. Note how it "sits" into the helmet, the correct discoloring, etc...

Anyone has an idea were these are comming from? If so, it would be nice to post some more detailed pictures overhere so we can learn from it. Remember, united we are strong

    Cheers

Chinstrap and drawstring are easy to spot, but that liner would have fooled me too. Maybe he has been screwed and someone sold him an original one instead of a repro....

Well that's another possibility offcourse...and let's hope so

Maybe I'll send him a message and ask for the origine of it.

        Cheers

          Repro Liner

Hello guys, The liner looks good.... except the sewing line (where the liner is stitched together in the back) on the rear of the liner is in the middle of the tongue gap. All the originals I have seen, are all sewn right next to or continued down the tongue. The gap between the tongue looks way too wide also.... JC

            Hi Jeff

Wel your observation concerning the stitching bring back some memories

I made the same observation some years ago overhere. I wondered about the same feature back then.

But by help of original examples posted, it was proved that the stitching can be everywhere, although it is much more common indeed to find them stitched like you described. Maybe I can trace that old thread.

Concerning the gap between the tongues. Maybe it looks a little wider as the liner sits against the inside-shell. I'm really having a hard time finding a red flag from those pictures ...maybe original afterall?

            Cheers

Hello Jan, To be completely sure, a complete close inspection would be in order ,but I would say it is as stated... a good repro... I do remember a few helmets that were not sewn down the tongue but it seems to be rare on original examples... Size probably has something to do with it also..Thanks, Jeff

I agree with the location of the stitching line as being a "red flag". However, I have handled original liners with this anomalie as well. It is however the exception and not the rule!

The thread used and the stitch length should be of some concern too. The repros don't put the proper felt band in, use the correct thread and the long stitch length seen on original liners...IMO. Sheep, goat or pig should be the leather used.

What the eye can't detect, the nose can. A clear nostril can smell fresh leather a mile away (almost). Unless of course, they smear the liner with moth balls.

How very true...there's nothing like the inimitable smell of a real German helmet. If the helmet smells like a Rawlings catchers mit it could be a bad sign!

This one is made in Prague. The liner band will probably read "B&C litzmannstadt, 1943". The producers of this liner make these to be sold as reproductions. (what others do to them as far as "ageing" is up to them")

With this one, The first thing that I noticed was the string. This is the exact type and weave that is used by the makers in Prague. They cannot find a close match to the original type.

Next thing that I notice is the type of wire used for the chinstrap mounts. Very familiar.

Upon closer examination, the color of the leather and the size marking are quite familiar as the Czech-made "B&C". The leather has been wet and then formed on a mannequin head to give it that "lived in" look.

To keep up with all the latest threats, Google periodically with "reproduction german helmet".

Oh great! I have a helmet with a B&C Litzmanstadt 1943 liner in it. I purchased this about a year or so ago with the understanding that it was original. Hmmm. Here is a photo of the liner pulled up to expose markings and the felt band. Please give your opinion on this.

Here is the entire liner. It is a bit skewed around, as I was looking closely at the markings on the band .
