With respect to the interior vs. exterior condition, isn't it possible that the helmet was reconditioned on the exterior at one point, without doing anything to the interior? I recently picked up an early M-35 DD Heer like that. The exterior is the typical dark gray rough finish, SD (though you can still see the Nat'l colors, as the vet rub some of the overlying paint off), but the inside is still the apple green, with an original 1937 dated, unreinforced liner in it. That might be the answer here. Or not.

        Steve,
You are absolutely correct. On a M35 reissue I would expect to see that. However this M40 I don't think was reissued, this looks like an original issue helmet to me.

I don't have a problem with the decal. It is possible someone tried to "protect" the liner with vaseline or some other product which caused the wear to the liner.

M-40 SD army Helmet with NS decal

HMSBrinmaric asked me to add some input to this discussion.I personally looked at this specific helmet a few months ago when the owner brought it to my home.I found nothing at all incorrect on the helmet except that somebody had oiled the liner. At the time, the helmet was not for sale or I would have bought it if the price were right(based on the condition).I think the pictures of the overall helmet are overexposed and that hurts the appearance. The adler,I found perfectly acceptable, especially based on the source from where the helmet originated.
