    Ciao Paolo,
Sorry, but the tri-color shield in photo IMO is fake, not have the substrate of
the original decal, the word doubtfull is the political version of suspect of
    fake...
Pio Filippani Ronconi is Professor for many years of the University in Naples and
have collaborate with this book with great interest and memories....

"six italians, dressed in rather unusual diving suits and equipped with materials of laughably little cost have swung the military balance of power in the Mediterranean in favour of the Axis".

      Quex,
I don't want to enter into any debate but I must assume that you must be the real expert if from this picture (which is also a bit faded) you can give such a precise judgement. Please enlight me regarding the right substrate that a decal like this should have (not kidding ).
After having read more carefully the pages of the book in question and having consulted with my attorney and having consulted the "Random House College Dictionary - Revised Version 2003 edition" I must confess that I came to the conclusion that "doubtful" is the political version of "doubtful". I also came to the conclusion that the Italian text it clearly states that those helmets were wrongly referred as being issued to SS units rather than to a Bersaglieri Battallion. Why on earth the Bersaglieri were issued with that type of helmets is another story but you know we Italians are so disorganised ....
      Regards
      Paolo

There was no Bulgarian volunteer force as such. Fascist Bulgaria had its own army & the tricolor Bulg. shield decal was applied only to the M-36 Bulg. helm & not to any German helms that i know of.

Note that the Bulg. shield decal among many others is being faked. See Steel-helmets-and-decals.com
