Seeing the images you sent, Zeke, I liked the cover. I also had higher resolution images to look at - I had to downsize them to post them here.

The only thing that concerned me was the rust on the cover and the lack of rust on the helmet. It made me think that perhaps the cover was not original to the helmet. Your explanation seems to cover that point quite well though.

Nice piece - even if I can't consider myself an expert, I would still have probably bought it had it been offered to me.

Greetings Chris: Thanks again for posting the pictures. You did a GREAT job!! There is no doubt the cover was on this helmet right from being issued . When I first removed the cover it was actually stuck right to the helmet with corrosion. I only lightly cleaned the helmet for preservation and holding them in your hands you are still able to match spot to spot on both of them. All the best!

How was it found by the dealer? With the splinter-side or the redcross-side vissible?

Greetings Jan: It's always a pleasure talking to another knowledgeable ,dedicated collector. The helmet was sold to me in the same condition the dealer had purchased it from the veteran's widow. The red cross was visible. I believe the cover was originally applied to the helmet not as a camo cover, but as a white background to display the Geneva cross on. I also believe that once the red cross was sewn on the white side, and applied on the helmet, it was never reversed to the splinter pattern side. Thank you Jan, and all the best! Take care

Zeke, No question, this is one of the rarest covers I have seen, affinity to the helmet and red cross..great example. You mentioned this was found via a widow of a veteran, Canadian WW2 veteran ? is that correct?

Greetings David: That is correct. I'm glad you enjoyed my German splinter pattern covered M40 helmet, it is my favourite. I have one other original combination , not German,but rare and unique. It is a WW2 British helmet with an original factory made hessian(burlap) cover. The hessian cover has camo paint applied to it.This was used in the New Guinea jungle during WW2. The cover is ORIGINAL to this helmet also. Always nice meeting noteable collectors like yourself. All the best!
