The 53 is not the leather size, and it's in the bottom of the helmet.

The 53 stamped in the dome was done at the factory when the helmet was refurbished, and indicates the size of the liner size.......

Your helmet is a good one, no worries.

Helmets were returned to the factory to have new parts and new paint after field use at times.

Sometimes when this was done, a stamp was put in the dome to give the size of the liner that was to be reinstalled.

At least that is what I have been told, and have several that have been refurbished and have this size stamp in the dome.

What Ron said about liner size stamps in the dome on refurbished helmets is true. But I don't think that is what happened here. This is a size 62 shell so it would not have a 53 liner and the liner in this helmet looks like it is the proper size and fits snugly. A better picture of the 53 marking might help but it may just be a rack number or some other unit designation.

It is also not certain from these pictures that this M40 was a refurb/reissue. It looks pretty much factory issue to me.
