    Chinstraps

When looking to buy a helemt how important is it that the helmet have a chinstrap? I feel that a helemt without a chinstrap is incomplete.

    Hi Bryan,

I suppose a helmet without a chin strap is incomplete.
But if i found a great helmet, but it was lacking a chin strap, i would still buy it.
    No question......
Original chin straps do come along now and again, so i would not worry too much........

    Steve.

The rarer the helmet the less concern if it had a chinstrap or not.

I like it when there is a chin strap...especially when it appears to be the original. A missing strap certainly doesn't stop me from buying a nice helmet though

If it can be verified a helmet came out of the war without a chinstrap I will not add one. When a helmet comes along without a chinstrap yet with D-rings which demonstrate a chinstrap was once there, I will seek a proper stap for the helm. Finding a strap with appropriate characteristics is not easy, however, and is why I horde chinstraps - someday just the right helm might come along which is in need of some strap from the footlocker. Just fitting any old strap to a helmet is not correct, IMO.

I agree with Andy that an original chinstrap is desireable but not a requirement.

Plan to spend at least $100 if you plan to add one later.

I have a nubby chinstrap that I swapped out for a longer one on my M-35 reissue that I am hoarding just in case I ever need an extra.

Yes, I totally agree! Just got strap no. #207 from Ken, near perfect match for my late production M42.
...you guys horde them - no wonder all the lids are strapless nowadays...
