Double decal question

Hi everyone,
Since I am a sniper rifle collector and am new to militaria I have some pretty basic questions. What is the reason for the double decal helmets? Why do some helmets have DD's and others don't? See I told you it is a basic question!!!! I appreciate you guys putting up with this old gun collector.

No problem,

Basically the early helmets had double decals. The national shield decals were removed after 1940. After that they all were issued as single decals. (all except police helmets)

Rumor had it the german soliders said the national shield was like a painted target on their helmets..

two decals : 25 june 1935 / 21 march 1940 - "Hoheitsabzeichen" ( eagle ) + " Wappenschild" ( national colors )

one decal : 21 mars 1940 / 28 august 1943 ( only hoheitsabzeichen" )

no decal : after 28 august 1943.
