Who Manufactured the Size 70 Steel Helmet

    Poll Question:
On the heels of a similar poll, I asked this question to another well known collector. That being:

    Who manufactured the "BIG" lids?

I've owned 68's in ET (& ckl), Q and NS. I've seen them in SE. The size 70 lids that I've seen have either been ET or ckl (same manufacturer). So if you own or have owned a "BIG" size 70 lid, please post your poll to help us out.

I'm curious is ET/ckl was the only manufacturer of this custom giant. Thanks in advance.

    Tom,

From my experience and reading it was only Eisenhuttenwerke/Thale who produced these oversized helmets.

      Darryl,

Do you remember where you read that? I have been unable to find ANY documentation anywhere. My friend also believed Q manufactured these, but I cannon find anyone who has owned a Q size 70 (or greater).

I knew there was a collector here that that specificly collected these..

          Thanks Perry,

It certainly seems that ET/ckl did manufacture all/most of these. I have suspected this for some time, but wanted to put it to the test. I noticed that the above linked thread had no other replies. So again I ask - Any documentation? Anyone?

            70

I have seen Chris's size 70 helmets and they are something to see. Another friend of mine who is a reenactor just bought a restored size 70 M42 and it is an ET.

Interesting. So far, only three people have voted, and one of those is for the SE Manufacturer, yet there is no post as to one.

Any way, you all have seen this before, here's my M40 ET70.

                Tom,

I have been racking my brain trying to remember where I saw that ET made the oversized helmets. Sorry, I can't locate it...perhaps I never saw it all and simply deduced this to be the case.

On a positive note, I did find a reference to the ink dome-stamps and the fact that virtually all were stamped by Gov't inspectors.

                Cheers,

                  Darryl,

Thanks. Ohh, will I see you at the SOS?

I have been super busy and haven't been on the forum in a while but this is a subject near and dear to me. Yes, I have owned four different size 70s and if my memory is correct the two M42s one was a ckl and the other was an ET. The M35 is definitely an ET. The M40 is a ET as well. Heavy heavy shell that M40. Both the M35 and M40 had been ruined paintwise having been scraped and repainted by the countries they came from postwar so I was able to pull them apart. The M35 had the early aluminum multipiece liner which was cool. Any other questions I can answer, let me know!

I own or have owned the following:

                      4 M42 size 70 helmets
                      1 m40 size 70 helmet
                      1 M42 size 72 helmet

                      All were ET/Ckl

                        Tom,

Yes, I am planning on being there...weather permitting since I am driving.

For whomever voted for SE/hkp and NS in this poll please provide pictures. I really don't believe any maker other than ET/ckl made these oversized helmets.
