Excellent historical post and helmet. You've done it again, Walter! I always look forward to reading your threads because of the work you put into the research and presentation of the historical context. This one rates right up there with your KM medic thread. You are a passionate historian and discerning collector and it is our privilege that you take the time to share these unique items with us.
I enjoy these unusual pieces, as you know. One can just imagine a country estate being shorn of its heavy curtains by FJ soldiers bivouacked there before the battle. Certainly there is plenty of photographic and cinematic evidence of troops on both sides availing themselves of whatever white cloth was available to camouflage their helmets and equipment.
Well done, and thanks for sharing!

All credit to you.
Too few collectors spend the time to dig deep and put in the hours (and hours and hours) of research it can take to get the story behind the artefact. It just goes to show what you can find, just by asking the right questions and persevering. And a story that would have been lost to history is now alive and well and saved for all time.
I'll second your praises of Mike at Westmoreland Research too - a great guy that totally shares the passion of us collectors and always goes the extra mile.
Thanks for sharing...a truly amazing piece and story.
Chris
