    Aussie Desert Dogs against Rommel

I posted this helmet for discussion on the British section but have a question for the camo helmet experts here. I know the British Desert Rats fought Rommel but, was there an Aussie Desert Dogs unit fighting Rommel as well? Whats up with the camo and dog on this helmet? I'm sure its real but never have seen one like it...

There is the Rats of Tobruk, but I've never heard of any desert dogs. Have you looked at Australian units that also served in Greece (6TH DIV?), Crete, Syria-Lebanon. It maybe trench art? I'm just speculating... The helmet looks Australian made.

I have a mate who knows a lot more about the 2ND AIF than I do, I hope you don't mind if I copy this picture and send it to him.

      Cheers.

No problem, any info on the helmet would help. It does also have his name in it. Thanks for the help.

I believe the 'rimless' version of the Brodies is what the Aussies used in WWII. Interesting piece for sure.

If you have a name, you should try and find him here. The AWM records are excellent and easy to search.

Let us know how you go.

            Cheers,

            Jamie.

Here's a photo of another Australian manufactured helmet I've had for some time featuring the same setup.

                  Cheers.

                    Cool helmet Cliff
I can't say I've ever heard of any units with that title even in an unofficial capacity.
Could be a personal affection by the owner.

                      Hi mate,

I asked my mate, his guess is that it maybe RAAF or Navy related. He has seen cartoon characters on Australian helmets before, but not to identify specific units.

                      Anyway, nice helmet.

                      Cheers,

                      Jamie

No problems with the camo or mural on that one IMO a 100% period piece. Never heard of the Desert dogs but the Australian 9th Division in Tobruk did give the Germans their first taste of defeat on land of the war.
                        Regards, Bill
