there is something special about this one after all
the inner and outer liner bands are magnetic, not aluminum, with the outer stamped Schuberth-Werke Braunschweig and dated 1931 below that, and is also size stamped 66 on the opposite side. the leather has the embossed Schuberth-Werke Braunschweig roundel as it should. it must be a rather early one since the leather rivets are round-heads and not the later aluminum flat-heads. also, WW1 flat split rivets are used to secure the liner the the shell.
could this be one of test helmets for the then new M31 liner?

I like your helmet a lot. But are you sure the liner band is steel and not aluminum? I have a helmet with that exact same liner but mine is aluminum. It is a little tricky to hold a magnet against the liner band and not have it attracted to the shell so maybe that is what happened? Sorry to sound like a doubting Thomas but I have never seen a steel band on a 1931 dated liner. As I said though, very nice helmet and a bit unusual to see an M18 repainted and with no decals. I assume there were decals under the last coat of rough paint?
Cheers,
Terry

you're partially right. the outer band is aluminum, i was confused by the attraction of the shell. but the inner band is definitely steel, i pulled it away from the outer band/shell and the magnet jumps to it, even in between the leather rivets. there are no decals under the repaint as far as i can tell. i don't think this one had any decals, perhaps this is original WW1 paint...
it looks to be named although i can't make it out, something ending in a "II",

I have one of these early M31 bands and a fridge magnet sticks right on it. Weird I guess but, as mentioned, the paint is not what we'd expect typically either. The additional pix seem to indicate previous or painted over insig.....? Maybe I'm trying to hard.
Robt.
PS......if you can please post some pix taken in subdued light outside.
