And always fund your paypal payment with your credit card as this also gives you insurance , I rarely buy from outside uk because of scams like this , don't get me wrong the uk has plenty of crooks but at least here you are able to give them a house call , you really are lucky you didn't make that payment ? - Trust your gut.
- If you think you are involved in an eBay scam, start a thread on the forum so others can be alerted. In this case we know of 3 people who almost got nailed. That means there are likely to be others out there as well.
- Don't pay on eBay via the "gift" PayPal option.
- Read the write up carefully. The seller mentions it did not have a decal, but the photos proved otherwise. I generally see a mistake in the write up of a fraudulent offering.
- Ask for additional photos via email. This way you also get the seller's email address in addition to "live" photos.
- Photos on dealers' sites should be watermarked.
- The photos of sold items should be deleted from a dealer's site.
- Be suspicious of any seller who volunteers to cut a deal and end the auction early, without the buyer asking first.
- Don't think you are the only one hoping for a good deal. These guys prey on that fact.
- Don't assume the seller is a naïve dummy and you are the smart one.
- Have a collecting network with people you can trust.
- And lastly........... don't buy from or sell to Larry F., or you might become a victim of a scam........
I was asking my self if this trickster has made some victims around the net!

Jeremy, sorry you do not like my opinions on this matter. The buyers did not contact the seller to end the auction. The seller sent invoices out of the blue and the guy who was about to send money was shocked when he received an email from the seller with an invoice, knowing the auction had not ended. It appears the fraudulent seller reached out to those who had bid on it. And I certainly never claimed my list included everything.
I agree if a buyer reaches an eBay seller and tries to end the auction early, then that guy is on his own. Not the issue here so I didn't list it. But I certainly don't feel sorry for those who play that game and get outsmarted.
As for watermarking photos; I have been asking the WAF administration for years for a enhancement which would automatically watermark a poster's photos. It falls on deaf ears and I am not an IT guy so I have no clue if it is even possible. We do discuss these matters behind the scenes, but not everyone feels as strongly about this matter as I do.
As for dealers not deleting sold photos, that is only my opinion and I do understand why they want to show everyone what they have sold. I just don't agree. When I buy something from a website I would not like to see the photos of MY item still listed forever.Willi

I think all of your points were valid and there are certainly some takeaways from this for all of us. I'm not against the watermarking and it may be something I start doing from here on out. I had started using watermarks years ago on images I posted on the forums but I guess they were seen as advertising so I was asked to stop. I will just have to use different watermarks depending upon where I post. It also does make sense to archive listings that are older; and I certainly wouldn't be against removing any photos if requested to do so by a new owner.
As far as this Ebay auction goes; to my knowledge there is no way for a seller to send an invoice to a buyer after an auction has been ended by the seller. The only way that I know of for a PayPal invoice to be sent is if the requester has the purchasers email address; which he would only have if it was provided to him by the purchaser. This information is not available through PayPal or Ebay unless an auction runs its course and in this case the only email address provided to the seller is that of the winning bidders. So my guess is that these people had sent their email addresses to the seller in an effort to circumvent the auction. Which is what it is; but I think this is a calculated risk on their part.

Bob, how about you? I think you mentioned an invoice. I know the other potential buyer told me he received and invoice from eBay and that is odd.Willi

I bid on the helmet, obviously i saw the decal and just sent a message saying that if ebay pull it to contact me,his reply was "will do" I still have all his emails.
He invoiced later on after contacting me for $2500 usd but it didn't make sense as the helmet was then at $3600.
Cheers
Bob
