    M35 Helmet and Decal Question...Hello! I'm new!

Hello! I'm new at militaria...so be gentle! And patient!

I am fascinated by WW1 trench warfare and following a rather heart-wrenching visit this spring to Ypres and area, am putting together a little (mostly) Canadian WW1 vignette...

In addition, my father was a German WW2 soldier. Fourteen when he enlisted, injured at 16, spent a year in the hospital and rehab, and the war was over when he got out.

...and finally, my daughter just signed up with the CAF...

With all this recent interest, my sons asked why I didn't put together a WW2 vignette as well?

I did purchase a M35 'relic' helmet. I realize much is faked...and I'm okay if this is not fully authentic...but I still have some questions.

Since my father fought on the Eastern Front/Berlin...I purchased the helmet from an Eastern seller (it was sent from Moldova). I think the helmet is authentic...but may have been repainted...or aged...so my first question is about what kind of faking is being done...

And my second question...assuming that this helmet is real...and the first decal is the National colours...what could the second decal be? The residue is white. If it's a Heer helmet...would the eagle decal (white on black background) have had a white underlayer to it?

    Hi FreeRange

    Welcome to the forum.
The white you are seeing is just the backing of the decal.

      Thank you!

I suppose then I have no way of knowing what the original decal was. That's okay too...but at least now I know!

Who knew helmets were this complicated? Trying to sort through all the material on-line seems next to impossible!

I did try to figure it all out by myself first...before I caved and asked for help!

If the right one is a tricolor than the left one is a Heer eagle for sure.

Thanks! I will assume then that is what it is. Makes sense.

Anyone know if there is any reason to think this is a fake relic? And if so...maybe direct me to a link that explains it a bit? I really am quite interested...

            Welcome to the forum!

When asking for opinions make sure you take lots of detailed pictures. It makes it more easy to comment.

But from what I can see it looks like a water-found relic, original iMO.

Thanks. I can certainly take some more photos. Not too much to see though...bumpy/bubbled paint and some rust...

I find it rather poignant all the same.

Welcome to the forum mate. Looks like it was DD Heer to me as well. Relic but real Johnno.

Hi FreeRange. Ypres is an excellent place to visit, been many many times studying and walking the battlefields of the CEF.

Regarding faking much is faked in this hobby as you know. Typically with relics fake SS decals are applied to make a $100 relic sell for $500 or more. Otherwise not much energy goes into making fake ground dug relics themselves other than the dressing up of such.

Cheers from one Canuck to another !

                  Doug

                    Thanks Guys!

I could certainly go back again...and this time we'd plan it out differently and only do a War Tour (if that's what one calls it)...

I did take a couple more photos of the helmet, but I don't think it shows much more than the original photo did.

I dont understand why some remove the liner after they find helmets.

I assumed they had rotted out.
