    Liner Original To Helmet Opinions

Hello everyone. This liner is in the nice M40 SE 64 Luftwaffe helmet that I bought last week. I was showing the helmet to a friend today and he questioned if the liner was original to the helmet.. I would like to get some thoughts / opinions as to whether you guys think it is or not? Thanks in advance BDM

I would say no...Your liner is a chamois material.....I believe this type of liner was found on later helmets than yours.....Bodes

You can see by the tampering off the liners metal ring were someone has bent it out of shape removing it form another helmet and not doing a good job:-(.

It definitely has some issues. The bent outer ring is a concern. Look at the backside of the leather for any ink stamps that may be there. They often contain numbers relating to a manufacture date, such as B42, for Berlin 1942, ect.

The underside of the leather is stamped B58VIII . . Anyone know what that might mean? Thanks BDM

                    Hi Dave,
A replaced liner for sure ,for the reasons already stated

The code is for the leather size,i would presume to make it easier for the person doing the stitching.

                    Cheers

                    Bob

Thanks to everyone. How much does the liner being replaced hurt the value of the helmet? BDM

So , if I am correct, this liner is an original WW2 German liner that was added to this helmet later or post-war? Thanks BDM

It's a original liner, but to me its a Post War add liner as if it was done during the War at a depot you wouldn't have the damage to the liner ring, and to me the person who originally removed it from its original helmet, or the person who put it into your'e helmet did a bad job.
