Exactly. During late-war, I assume almost anything would have passed.

Oh for Christ's sake its a bit of German parachute that someone has put over a German helmet secured with a band doesn't make it a custom made German helmet cover worth thousands
I remember a guy in the states about 10yrs ago took a mint chute and cut it up, because as he said to me he could get more money for it selling it for scarves,I called him an asshole but he never responded, probably because he realised he was

I don't quite remember camo parachutes having sleeves, vent-holes, buttons or being one single color, so no, that is NOT another one.

Never mind, I take that back. It's definitely a field cap (the type with the straps up around the front). You can see its visor in the first pic. That also explains the buttons and vent holes.

To finally put it to rest, I contacted the seller and he said it was a pile cap.

So just to recap, no one yet has had a reason for it being fake other than "it wouldn't have happened".

Without strong provenance I wouldn't touch it or incredibly cheap.
Mind I dont understand how you can ask for opinions from a few outside shots of something that a monkey could make and stick on a helmet with a bit of elastic. Helmet covers have been faked to high heaven so.........

It should be here within the next day or so, so I will get some good shots of it then. It was very much on the cheap side, and came from a man with a massive accumulation of military stuff.

Would I simply be stating the obvious if I comment that it could have been sewn up in 1984? You'll probably never know for sure.

You're correct, I probably won't. But that's with a lot of things... how would you know if the chinstrap on your helmet was added in 1958 or 1980? Or what about someone adding a (real, unused) decal to a mint unissued shell in the last decade? This hobby is all about taking chances and trust in items. I feel that this helmet cover specifically, would be too odd of an item to put any actual effort in to sewing up, when you could instead cut it in to a square, plop it over a shell, spray it with a little starch and call it the same thing. Sometimes the items that are too weird are the ones that come out to be the most original.

You are 100% correct. I don't disagree at all. But this is the very reason that I personally play to safe. I don't go for the rare variants, super rare wires, and or super-duper rare DD, SS, camo'd, wired, medic helmets. I just wouldn't put any trust in a cover like this, especially as displayed in that picture on a $2 styrofoam mannequin helmet with a cheesy beard in what looks like an Army/Navy surplus store.

But, you may have something here. No guts, no glory. And you've got more guts than I do!

Looking forward to your pics and analysis when it arrives.

Ok, it's here... It is pretty big, and is way too big for my size 64 shell. Most likely would fit a 68 much better. I added the grey yarn so I could cinch it.
